1. Leichhardt River Rest Area and the Savannah Way: Why Grey Nomads Drive This Far
The Leichhardt River is a river in north-west Queensland, Australia. Around 50 kilometres upstream from its mouth are the Leichhardt Falls. The Savannah Way crosses the river at a concrete causeway, and the camping area on both banks above the falls has become one of the most talked-about free camps in Gulf Country. This is a very popular and scenic stop along the Queensland Gulf section of the Savannah Way.
For senior travellers and retirees living on the road, the Leichhardt River Rest Area represents both a bucket-list stop and a genuine logistics challenge. There’s no power, no water, no toilets and no mobile coverage at the camp itself. The nearest health clinic is in Burketown — over 70 km away on sealed road. This guide gives you the honest assessment so you can decide if it’s right for you in 2026.
2. Leichhardt Falls — Stunning, But Genuinely Hard for Seniors
Every photo you see of Leichhardt Falls makes it look like paradise. The stepped limestone falls, the birdlife, the outback sunsets — it is genuinely beautiful. But here’s the honest senior assessment:
- No facilities whatsoever: A basic bush camp located by the edges of Leichhardt Falls. No facilities, watch for Crocodiles.
- 4WD essential: Free camp with no facilities, accessible via a side track heading north off the Burketown Normanton Rd which is a bit of a bumpy sandy track and best suited to 4WD vehicles.
- Sandy, rough access: Follow the signs, it is about a kilometre’s drive in on a sloping sandy track to the lower banks, 4WD recommended.
- Crocodile habitat: Swimming is not advisable at Leichhardt due to Saltwater Crocodiles inhabiting the river which feeds the falls.
- No potable water: The river water is not suitable for drinking without treatment — your stay is limited by the water you carry.
- Rocky, uneven terrain: Track in is sandy and soft. Camping area is rocky and rough. This is extremely difficult for seniors with mobility limitations.

5. 4WD Access & Crocodile Safety — What It Means for Seniors at Leichhardt River
Two risks dominate this location for older travellers: getting bogged on the access track and the very real presence of crocodiles.
Access Track Warning
There were a couple of caravans parked up on the riverbank but it is a little rough in areas so a 4×4 would be recommended if you’re towing a good size van. The access track from the Nardoo-Burketown Road is approximately 1 km of sloping sandy terrain. Seniors with large 2WD caravans should not attempt this. If you are not confident reversing or manoeuvring on sand, stop at the causeway level and view the falls from above — do not drive down to the lower banks.
Crocodile Safety
The guys that pulled me out of the sand were walking across the river causeway and spotted one on the bank not far away. The Leichhardt River Falls river system can endure massive floods in the wet season, so the possibility of salt water crocs is very real. Salties as they are sometimes known have been found many hundreds of Kilometers from the ocean.
6. What the Leichhardt River Rest Area Doesn’t Tell You Online
- Night temperatures drop: At night the temperature can get very cool, so always a good idea to have warm gear with you and an extra blanket, even in what you may think is a very hot place. A lot of inland country can get very cold indeed.
- No phone signal at all: There is no Telstra, Optus or Vodafone coverage at the camp. Your only emergency communication is a PLB or satellite device.
- Water tank damage risk: Unfortunately for the caravan in front of me he had none in his van tank when he reached the river, as he must have bottomed out and put a hole in it. The rough track can damage low-clearance water tanks.
- Fuel planning critical: Burketown lies 77km west of Leichhardt River. Normanton is approximately 154 km east. Fill up before you leave either town.
- Solo safety: For solo seniors — especially women — this is an isolated bush camp with no other guaranteed travellers nearby. Consider camping at the causeway level (visible from the road) rather than down on the lower banks.
