FIRST AID KNOWLEDGE ------------------- [ ] Know the first aid steps for Funnel-web spider bites: • Use the Pressure Immobilisation Technique (PIT) • Apply a broad elastic bandage firmly from fingers/toes upward • Immobilise the entire limb with a splint • Keep the victim still and calm • Call 000 immediately [ ] Know the first aid steps for Redback spider bites: • DO NOT use PIT (it increases pain) • Apply a cold pack only • Keep the victim still and comfortable • Call 000 if severe pain, child, elderly, or bite on the face/torso FIRST AID KIT ITEMS ------------------- [ ] Carry 3 x broad elastic bandages (10–15 cm wide) for Funnel-web first aid [ ] Carry instant cold packs for Redback bites [ ] Store bandages and cold packs together in your first aid kit CAMP SAFETY HABITS ------------------- [ ] Keep a torch or headlamp accessible for night toilet walks [ ] Shake out shoes, boots and gloves before wearing [ ] Check camp chairs, towels and clothing left outside overnight [ ] Inspect under the van each morning for spiders seeking warmth [ ] Check storage bays before opening, especially in cooler weather [ ] Keep bedding off the floor and away from tent or van walls [ ] Avoid leaving clothing or towels on the ground [ ] Wear closed shoes at night around camp [ ] Keep rubbish sealed to avoid attracting insects (spider food) EMERGENCY READINESS ------------------- [ ] Save emergency numbers in your phone before travelling [ ] Know your exact location (GPS) before calling 000 [ ] Keep this checklist laminated in your first aid kit
